The sensitivity range on the L820 is ISO 125 to ISO 3200. The lowest setting gives lovely, clear and crisp results with no sign of noise anywhere. In fact, the first slight drop in quality occurs at ISO 400 with a mild discolouration in the darker colours. This is all when viewed at 100% magnification, though, so if you're looking at them normal size then you shouldn't notice it really. The COOLPIX L830’s built-in pop-up flash is activated by pressing a button on the left of the body just below the flash housing. My guess is that figure is derived at the maximum 3200 ISO sensitivity setting. That equates to just under 6.5m at 1600 ISO which compares with a quoted figure of 5m (also most likely at 1600 ISO) for the PowerShot SX400 IS. We took a number of shots to test the camera's responsiveness, from switch on to first photo, shot to shot, focusing speed etc. We take a number of shots and then use the average to ensure accurate and consistent tests, making it easy to compare with other cameras.

The COOLPIX L820 has optical image stabilisation which Nikon calls Vibration reduction. This moves the lens elements to compensate for camera movement and reduce the chances of blurred photos due to camera shake at slow shutter speeds. Vibration reduction is activated from the Setup menu and in addition to the On and Off positions there’s a new third option called hybrid. This combines the optical stabilisation with in-camera post processing to digitally remove any blurring that remains. The digital correction is applied only under certain conditions, including when the shutter speed is slower than 1/30 at the wide angle setting or 1/250 at the telephoto focal length and when the sensitivity is 200 ISO or lower. It has to be said for an ISO 3200 image, the quality is exceptional on the L820. We certainly didn't expect to see results like this. Sure, there's noise present, but we expect that. Colours have been smudged and merged to dissipate salt & pepper noise and edge definition is reduced, but nowhere near as much as what we expected. The maximum recording time for a single movie clip is 35 minutes, even if there’s sufficient space on the card for more, and Nikon recommends using a speed class 6 or faster card for Full HD recording. That's not the largest by a long shot, but to keep the price affordable, the 30x is ample. It gives a 35mm equivalent of 22.5 – 675mm. There's certainly some image loss at the edges of the frame, but that's to be expected at this wide an angle.
