Description

After a stagecoach carrying Government Gold is robbed the Cavalry learn from Joe Barlow (Dan Duryea), a reb convict, that the gold was hidden in land which is now in the middle of Indian treaty territory which is off limits to soldiers. It is why Captain Matt Martin (Robert Fuller) and a small group of plain clothes cavalry men along with Joe head in to the Indian country to recover the hidden gold. Along the way in Hays City they find themselves forced to take woman of ill repute, Memphis (Jocelyn Lane) with them and then they find themselves not only having to deal with the Apaches who don't appreciate them entering their territory but some outlaws who are also after the Gold. Narcissistic" Matt Rife Faces More Controversy After Assuming People Hate Him Because They’re "Jealous" In Resurfaced Clip Phantom Hill is located on land newly-assigned to the Comanche and the group must deal with hostilities from them. Eventually, after the gold is located, the rebel gets one of the group drunk, kills him and steals his gun. He kills another man, then escapes with the group's weaponry, the wagon filled with the gold, and the woman. The remaining men, without guns, must again face the Comanche. After this confrontation, only the captain and one other remain alive. They set off in pursuit of the rebel. Salter (Joseph Gershenson supervising) and cinematography is by William Margulies. The second half disappointed me with the implausible tactics against the Indians, and other implausible situations. One good example is when the hero and a few stragglers are left without guns and horses in the wastelands, and are surrounded by Indians. Their solution: create a barn fire and surround the fire with the dead white bodies. Thinking they are live whites, the Indians rush to the fire and shoot the dead bodies with arrows. Meanwhile the few live whites happened to be situated where they can jump down on and overpower (silently!) the few Indians guarding the Indian horses. The whites flee on some Indian horses and stampede away the other horses! At the end of the Civil War, Captain Matt Martin accepts a perilous covert mission to retrieve a million dollars in gold stolen from a Union regiment during a deadly ambush at Phantom Hill – the massacre where his officer- brother died. The catch - to find the gold, Martin must accept the dubious help of the murderous convict who led the Confederate rebels. Played with venomous abandon by the ever- charming Dan Duryea, Barlow starts off deceptively innocent. After trying unsuccessfully to jump off a train and elude Martin, he settles in for the long, conniving haul. Not that the movie doesn’t have its head-scratching moments. When Fuller gets his assignment, he’s given a photo of Barlow that looks nothing like an old West tintype. And Barlow buries water in the desert so he can retrieve it years later? The Gilded Age': No One is More Disappointed About Susan Blane's and Larry Russell’s Break Up Than Production Designer Bob Shaw At the end of the American Civil War, a group of Southern rebels steal a Union shipment of gold and bury it in a cave near an area known as Fort Phantom Hill, Texas. After they are captured by Union forces, their leader secretly makes a deal with the army to reveal the gold's location in return for his release; a release based on a pardon promised him by the Confederate States of America at the beginning of the Civil War. Dan Duryea as Joe Barlow, the man who agrees to lead a small detail to the gold in Incident at Phantom Hill (1966) At the end of the Civil War a group of rogue Confederate soldiers stole a shipment of Union gold they then buried in a cave near Phantom Hill, Texas. Tasked with finding the gold by the U.S. government, veteran Matt Martin ( Robert Fuller) escorts the one man that knows the location: confederate renegade-turned-convicted-thief Joe Barlow ( Dan Duryea). Having assembled a semi-reliable team, including one or two unwanted guests, Martin tangles with deadly Indians, violent outlaws and the unforgiving desert terrain, trying desperately to stay alive long enough to return the gold. Meanwhile Barlow tries his utmost to tempt the rest of the party into making off with the treasure.

It's a roll call of fine Western character actors, with the square jawed Fuller leading off on alpha male duties, behind him Akins (Comanche Station), Duryea (Winchester '73) and Noah Beery Jr (Decision At Sundown) lift the standard plot formula to better heights; further enhanced by the appearance of Denver Pyle (Fort Massacre) in a deliciously vile secondary villain role. Incident at Phantom Hill was scripted by longtime John Ford collaborator Frank S. Nugent (The Seachers). Veteran director Earl Bellamy, best known for his adeptness with the western TV genre, directed over 1600 episodes of television including The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin ; The Lone Ranger; Tales of Wells Fargo; Lassie and Bachelor Father. Director of Photography William Margulies (Have Gun, Will Travel; The Lawless Years ) also shot 22 episodes of Robert Fuller’s series Emergency in 1972- 73.

It's the closing days of the Civil War, and the army is mopping up the situation out west.. Among the matters to be cleared up is a million dollars in missing gold. They have cut a deal with one of the robbers: freedom in return for helping to return it. Robert Fuller gets the assignment of leading the troops out to dig it up. There are just two problems: the first is that it's buried on Indian territory, from which the army is barred. The other is the guy leading them there is Dan Duryea at his smarmiest. Robert Fuller turns in a bravura, no- holds- barred performance as the complex Captain drawn into a game of cat- and- mouse with the manipulative ex- con. When Barlow murders two of the crew and takes Memphis hostage, Matt and Adam hunt him down in an excruciating, slow- burning desert chase. Robert De Niro Slams Apple And Gotham Awards For Censoring His Anti-Trump Remarks: "How Dare They Do That" Robert Fuller stars as intrepid Captain Matt Martin in this stunning western caper teeming with action, heist movie intrigue and the edgy twists of film noir. Cast wise Fuller turns in a lead performance of some macho substance, further begging the question on why he didn't have a more rewarding career? Duryea (was he ever bad in a film?) is restrained yet very effective as a grinning viper in the nest, while Akins, Beery and Pyle leave favourable impressions. Simcox, however, is underwritten and Chiles is just poor and suffers in comparison to those around him. Lane was always going to be up against it as the sole female character, it is a token lady role and she isn't much of an actress. But she positively sizzles with sexuality and delivers what the makers were calling for in the story. A sight for sore eyes to be sure, particularly when wearing an hour glass green dress.
