About this deal

Shooting modes include Auto, intelligent Auto, as well as full manual shooting, along with new candle-light, food and kids modes. It's possible to shoot creative effects with a preview showing the effect before taking the shot, and new to the EOS 100D is the ability to record two versions of the photo, one with the effect applied and one without, both as JPEG files, so that beginners don't need to resort to the RAW file if they don't like the effect, or left the effect on by mistake. At the lowest sensitivity settings, the Canon EOS 100D is able to resolve up to around 28 on our chart. If you are shooting raw images there is a slight improvement, but it can’t resolve much higher. However, the lines are more defined, especially after a slight sharpening. I don’t know whether this has anything to do with the lens coatings, but
I suspect that it is more than likely due to
the way the sensor and processor adjust
the contrast curve and blue colours in images, regardless of which picture style
is selected. It is clear why EOS cameras
are popular among landscape photographers, despite their slightly more restricted dynamic range compared to rival brands. While the 100D's LP-E12 rechargeable lithium ion battery performance isn't quite as grand as that of its bigger brother the 700D at 440 shots, the 100D offers up a maximum 380 pictures if operating at room temperature. We were away with the camera for two weeks, using it more or less every day but only had to recharge it twice, with a separate mains charger provided for the purpose.

Max duration 29min 59sec, Max file size 4GB (If file size exceeds 4GB a new file will be created automatically) Overall, the build quality of Canon EOS 100D DSLR camera can be said to be very good as it is sturdy and robust despite boasting a compact body. In other words, you can take comfort in the fact that this Cano DSLR camera can withstand harsher punishment as well as being less prone in getting damaged easily. In addition, the rubberized elements around this Canon camera make it feels right on your hands. In fact, you will feel comfortable when holding it. Responsive To Your Creative Needs At the core of the Canon EOS 100D is an 18-million-pixel, APS-C-size CMOS sensor. Canon has been using an 18-million-pixel CMOS sensor for a few years now, and this latest version features a hybrid phase-detection AF system built onto the sensor. We have already seen this used in the Canon EOS M compact system camera, and the EOS 650D and new EOS 700D DSLRs. The EOS 700D is really just a reprised version of the EOS 650D, with little in the way of new features. As with the EOS M and 650D, the EOS 100D is designed to appeal to owners of compacts who have outgrown their camera and want to step-up to something that gives better results without being too complicated. The touch-screen operation is seamlessly integrated, offering the ability to take a picture with one press of the screen. Even if you prefer using the viewfinder and hate touch-screens and the need to hold the camera at arm's length to use it, you'll still appreciate the ability to review your images by swiping from side to side and pinching to magnify them (at least we did), although the innovative Hybrid AF system still doesn't solve the camera's sluggish Live View auto-focusing.Image: Colours produced by the Canon EOS 100D are excellent, and I particularly enjoyed using the monochrome setting with the red filter effect Canon EOS 100D review – Autofocus In fact, the Canon EOS 100D and 700D are remarkably similar, both having the same resolution sensor, a 3in, 1.04-million-dot touch-sensitive LCD screen, and a maximum sensitivity of ISO 25,600. Both can also shoot video at a resolution of 1080p at 30fps.

Alternatively there is a vast range of mirrorless cameras available, which are worth looking at if small size is of a priority, including the Sony NEX-3N / NEX-5R, Panasonic Lumix GF6 / G6, Olympus PEN Lite E-PL5 / E-PM2, and Samsung NX300 to name a few. It is in areas of shadow that there is less detail, with noise being introduced as these shadowy areas are lightened. For this reason it is best to produce images that are slightly lighter, thereby giving areas of shadow as much light as possible before darkening them when processing the raw file. Review Roundup

With increasing numbers of potential DSLR owners now opting for compact system cameras, many manufacturers are now rationalising their DSLR range rather than expanding it. With Canon’s EOS M being one of the newest compact system cameras on the market, it is perhaps surprising that the company has now unveiled the EOS 100D, said to be the lightest DSLR available with an APS-C sensor. Surely this compact DSLR will cannibalise sales of the EOS M? Having spent some time with the Canon EOS 100D, things start to make sense. The new EOS 100D / Digital Rebel SL1 is the smallest DSLR camera that Canon have ever made. Measuring 116.8 x 90.7 x 69.4mm and weighing just 407g, it sits between the EOS M compact system camera and the EOS 700D in both size and price. Despite its tiny dimensions, the control layout will be instantly familiar to anyone who's used a mid-range Canon DSLR before, commendably offering most of the external controls that the previous generation EOS 650D offered. Aside from Canon, Panasonic’s new Lumix DMC-G6, which is a DSLR-style CSC, is around the same price as the Canon EOS 100D and also has a good specification. See our Panasonic Lumix DMC-G6 review here. Canon EOS 100D review – Our verdict The Canon EOS 100D consists of an aluminium alloy core, surrounded by a combination
of polycarbonate resin, carbon and glass fibre to add strength while keeping the
body as light as possible. I was happy to
have the camera slung over my shoulder
all day, and at just 407g, including
battery and card, the weight was hardly noticeable.
