A damaged survivor of the First World War, Tom Birkin finds refuge in the quiet village church of Oxgodby where he is to spend the summer uncovering a huge medieval wall-painting. The musical score is easier to get hold of Howard Blake: Violin Concerto "The Leeds"; A Month in the Country Suite; Sinfonietta and I can really recommend this beautiful violin suite for strings. As for Carr’s other fiction, I’ve heard very good things about the football one – How Steeple Sinderby Wanderers Won the FA Cup. It is through this that “A Month In The Country” explores themes like the transformative power of art, the fleeting nature of happiness, and the lingering impact of the past.

And, although we both looked outward across the meadow, she didn’t draw away as quite easily she could have done. Though Birkin is an unbeliever, there is prevalent religious symbolism throughout the book, mainly dealing with judgement. As Birkin uncovers patches of gilt and cinnabar up on his scaffold, Moon digs his pits outside the church walls; both of them are striving for some sort of, if not restoration, then freedom from their past, and for Birkin, at least, his stay at Oxgodby is a time of healing.

It starts that way, but, as Birkin recognizes at the end of his time, he “lived with a very great artist, my secret sharer of the long hours I’d labored in the half-light above the arch. Of course, as my fellow readers will understand, many other books were read before I finally plucked this slim volume down from the shelf. When he goes to the rectory to say farewell, he finds the Keaches have packed up and left, probably for the more welcoming communities of Sussex. The film has been neglected since its 1987 cinema release and it was only in 2004 that an original 35 mm film print was discovered, due to the intervention of a fan. Above all, this is a beautifully written novel imbued with a strong sense of longing, a nostalgia for an idyllic world.

Slightly Foxed brings back forgotten voices through its Slightly Foxed and Plain Foxed Editions, a series of beautifully produced little pocket hardback reissues of classic memoirs, all of them absorbing and highly individual.

It's 1920 and veteran Tom Birkin finds refuge in a quiet village where he spends his time uncovering a medieval wall-painting. In the summer of 1920, a young man escapes London to embark on the unveiling of a medieval church wall painting in a small north country village.

Carr’s exquisite short novel A Month in the Country, Moon finds the missing 400-year-old grave where, all along, he knew it would be. I do know what you mean about the tendency to fade though – what remains most strongly is the atmosphere and mood, the feelings it evoked at the time of reading.

Carr has the magic touch to re-enter the imagined past -- Penelope Fitzgerald --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition. Slim as it is, this is a tender and elegant novel that seemingly effortlessly weaves several strands together.
